The Bottom Line

As a long-time fan of VOOPOO devices, it is not surprising to me that the latest devices in the much-loved ARGUS range are good. What was a little surprising was just HOW GOOD these are. It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that the ARGUS G4, in particular, is probably my favorite straight-out-of-the-box pod vape I have used in at least 12 months, and maybe even longer.

The multi-ohm pods could have been a gimmick, but as far as I am concerned, they definitely aren't. If they were only single-resistance pods with the level of performance, reliability, and consistency that they have, they would still easily sit among the best pods available today. Their ability to switch between multiple resistances only further elevates them. I was and continue to be truly impressed by just how great these pods are.

Aside from the slight issue (potentially, for some users) with MTL performance, I really have no problems with how these vapes performed as a whole. The battery life is good, the pods are reliable and seem to last really well, the controls make sense, and both devices are incredibly easy to use on a day-to-day basis.

If you are looking for a versatile, well-built, fuss-free RDL pod vape, one that can provide different vaping experiences to suit your needs throughout the day, I could not recommend a better option than the ARGUS G4 at this point in time. I missed having the lower resistance option in the G4 mini, but if that isn't too important to you, this is also a great, if less adaptable, pod vaping option.

Product Overview

Fun fact: the very first pod vape that I found enjoyable and satisfying to use on my journey to give up smoking was a VOOPOO. An early version of the Doric 20, to be precise. But while I have used a few others from these veterans of the vape industry since then, my gaze has shifted to other vaping brands in more recent years. All that being said, I was pretty excited to get my hands and lips on the latest version of one of VOOPOO's most popular device series: the ARGUS.

The ARGUS G4 and G4 mini are pod vapes, but pod vapes with a twist. They both use 3.5 mL multi-ohm pods, which allow users to switch resistances without physically swapping out the pods or coils. The resistances range from 0.4Ω to 1.0Ω, potentially making this device perfect for anyone still trying to work out what vaping style they prefer.

These ARGUS G4 models also feature impressive 1650 mAh batteries, high-quality materials, clever coil technology, and smart/adjustable wattage. Even without those innovative multi-ohm pods, these devices seem to tick many of the boxes on my list of what makes a pod vape great. But the proof is always going to be in the daily-use pudding, a pudding in which I have had my face buried for the last couple of weeks.

Design & Build Quality

VOOPOO ARGUS G4 & G4 mini design

The design of the ARGUS G4 range does not stray from the standard for most modern pod vapes, being tall, flat, and slim. The G4, at 121 mm, is slightly taller than the 113 mm G4 mini (unsurprisingly), but they are pretty comparable in terms of width and depth.

Both devices use a metal unibody design that is common among the more premium vape ranges we see nowadays. Unusually, there is some variation in the exact metal used across the devices.

The G4 mini uses full-metal aluminum alloy across the board, but the bigger G4 introduces Zinc Alloy versions alongside aluminum alloy and also adds leather and decorative panels, depending on the color you choose. This affects not only the outward appearance of the different G4 versions but also their weight, with the zinc alloy version weighing about 20 g more than the aluminum alloy versions.

The layout of the various buttons, sliders, displays, etc., is sensible and practical in both models. The display/LEDs sit near the top of the front face, with the airflow slider on the back face. The button (on the G4 only) sits on one edge, with the USB port opposite. Everything is within easy reach of your thumb as you hold the device in your hand, and it all feels comfortable and well thought out.

Branding has been kept to a minimum (which is a definite plus point for me), and no matter the color option you have in your hand, both devices look and feel pretty classy. Speaking of colors, both G4 devices are available in a range of eight, although, as mentioned, the design of the G4's varies slightly more due to the extra decorative panels. These color options are: Orange, Green, Purple, Silver, Blue, Gray, Brown, Black.

Pods

ARGUS G4 Pod multi-ohm

Both the ARGUS G4 and G4 mini are well-built and well-designed, but not obviously innovative or unique on the outside. You have to delve into the pods to start to find the innovative features, and in doing so, you'll uncover what really makes these devices shine. While both models are compatible with any pods in the ARGUS range, they come with VOOPOO's new multi-ohm 3.5 mL pods (2 mL TPD), and it's these pods I'll be discussing here.

As the name suggests, the multi-ohm pods offer multiple resistances in a single unit. In the ARGUS G4, the pod can switch to resistances of 0.4Ω, 0.7Ω, or 1.0Ω. On the G4 mini, the pod can switch to resistances of 0.7Ω, or 1.0Ω.

You can switch between these options quickly and easily by simply flipping the pod around (0.7Ω to 1.0Ω) or by double-tapping the G4's button (any resistance to 0.4Ω). As you do so, the currently selected resistance is clearly shown, either on the display or by the color of the LED lights.

I have used devices from other brands that use multi-ohm pods, but they have all been limited to two resistances, and none provided the distinct and noticeable difference in the draw that you get with these. Switch from 1.0Ω (or even 0.7Ω) to 0.4Ω, and you really feel it. It's a clever and well-implemented system, and as someone who enjoys different vaping experiences at different times of the day, I'm totally here for it!

ARGUS G4 mini pod detail

The coils inside the multi-ohm pods use VOOPOO's latest iCosm Code 2.0 technology, which offers a whole host of benefits. iCosm Code 2.0 introduces a large coil chamber filled with Golden Cotton, which has aerospace-grade heat resistance and is designed to stabilize and even out the flow of e-liquid to the heating element.

This provides consistent flavors and a coil that can last 300% longer than those using standard cotton. It also has a liquid-seal shield, a clever system that allows e-liquid to form a film over 99% of the cotton. This helps keep the air pressure inside the coil consistent and reduces the chance of leaks.

If all this talk of Golden Cotton, liquid films, and oversized chambers is going in one ear and out the other, let me just say that whatever technology is inside these pods, it works superbly.

The flavors produced are excellent and consistent. I had no issues with popping, spitback, leaks, or sluggish firing at any time during the (more than) two weeks I have been using them. VOOPOO suggests that each coil is good for around 100 mL of e-liquid, and after getting through around 70 mL with a single pod, I have little doubt that this is accurate.

Features

G4 display

Despite being pretty clever and innovative, the ARGUS G4 and G4 mini are not particularly feature-rich (at least, in features that you have manual control over).

The G4 has a 0.85-inch HD display that shows the sort of information you might reasonably expect: battery level, wattage level, resistance, puff count, and button lock status. It isn't the largest display you will find on a pod vape, but it is big enough. More importantly, it is bright, crisp, and not too cluttered.

The G4 mini eschews the display in favor of a simple array of four LEDs. Each represents 25% of battery life, and together they change color to indicate the resistance being used (green for 1.0Ω and white for 0.7Ω).

G4 mini LEDs

The settings shown on the G4's display are all controlled using the single button. It uses the now-familiar system of different pressing patterns doing different things: two taps to change resistance, three to change wattage, five to enter the settings menu, press and hold to select an option, etc. The settings menu gives you access to things like the puff counter reset, theme selection (there are three), and the off switch.

The airflow slider, which is the same on both devices, is generally pretty good. It slides smoothly and has a good level of resistance to prevent it from accidentally being altered in your pocket. There is a noticeable difference between fully open and fully closed, but I felt that this difference could have been greater.

Even fully closed with the resistance set to 1.0Ω, it doesn't feel truly tight. It's not super loose, but if you like a very tight MTL draw, it might struggle to hit the sweet spot for you.

Airflow slider

Both the G4 and G4 mini feature variable wattage, but only the more fully-featured of the two devices, the ARGUS G4, allows manual wattage adjustment alongside the Smart Wattage adjustment that automatically happens when you flip to a different resistance.

To be fair, the Smart Wattage works well and seems set at optimum levels. While I experimented with tweaking the wattage within the different resistances, I generally found that the auto settings worked best.

Battery Life & Charging

G4 charging port

The battery capacity of the ARGUS G4 and G4 mini is another thing that helps them stand out from the crowd and is sure to appeal to many vapers. Both devices feature a 1650 mAh high-density cell, said to provide up to five days of use between charges. That's a slight upgrade from the 1500 mAh of the G3 series, and as much or more power than almost every comparable vape on the market today.

It should be obvious to all but the very newest vapers that the suggested battery life and what it actually achieves in daily use can vary considerably depending on how you vape.

Five days is likely about right for a light vaper using 1.0Ω and 12 W of power, but if you're a heavy vaper using 0.4Ω and 35 W, you shouldn't be surprised if that lifespan is halved. In my two weeks of testing, the average for 0.4Ω/30 W was two days. At 0.7Ω/18 W it was just over three days, and at 1.0Ω/12 W it was around four days.

These are all pretty good numbers, but even so, it is good to see that VOOPOO chose to use a USB port rated for fast charging to keep downtime to a minimum.

Despite that large battery, a full recharge of the ARGUS G4 via its 2 A port takes around 40 minutes. The G4 mini, which uses a slightly lower-powered 1.5 A port, takes around 55 minutes on average. Perfectly acceptable in devices that could go four or five days between charges.

Performance

G4 and mini side by side

The ARGUS G4 and G4 mini are both designed for MTL and RDL vaping, and the ability to set the resistance between 0.4Ω and 1.0Ω certainly supports this idea. The airflow can be made suitably loose, and combined with the power boost that comes with the 0.4Ω resistance, the RDL experience is really very good; as good as any RDL pod vape I have used in the last 12 months or more.

When I tested the MTL performance, the results were a little less stellar. The MTL experience isn't bad, but as mentioned earlier, the airflow never gets truly tight. Even with the higher resistance selected, it still felt like tight RDL rather than MTL or even loose MTL. Whether this is a problem for you will really depend on how tight you like your MTL draw.

When it comes to flavor and vapor production, I had no issues at all. The iCosm Code 2.0 coils really produce great flavors, especially at 0.4Ω, with a satisfying throat hit and a decent lungful of vapor on every puff. VOOPOO seems to recommend using the multi-ohm pods with nic salts only, but I tested them with both nic salts and freebase liquids, and they handled everything perfectly.

Verdict

As a long-time fan of VOOPOO devices, it is not surprising to me that the latest devices in the much-loved ARGUS range are good. What was a little surprising was just HOW GOOD these are. It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that the ARGUS G4, in particular, is probably my favorite straight-out-of-the-box pod vape I have used in at least 12 months, and maybe even longer.
